The Lost World of Midtown Nightlife.

Danny’s Hide-A-Way was a beloved restaurant and bar in Manhattan, located at 151 East 45th Street on what was once New York’s famed Steak Row. It was known for steaks, filet mignon, lobsters, and an atmosphere that drew entertainment and sports personalities nightly. The restaurant was opened in 1945 by Dante “Danny” Stradella, who had served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His mother, Mama Rose Stradella, handled the cooking.

Danny’s became a social hub for pressmen, writers, and entertainers in mid-century New York. The exterior featured a 60-foot awning proclaiming it “the home of DANNY’S HIDEAWAY and His Inferno, His Music Room, His Menu Room, His Key Room, His Nook.” The restaurant became famous for celebratory parties—from TV contract signings to opening nights.

Its cultural staying power lingered for decades: in Mad Men, Don Draper slips into Danny’s and orders an Old Fashioned, a knowing nod to the bar’s enduring place in the mythology of mid-century nightlife.
