Quintessential Glass in the Heyday of the Home Bar.

With a dramatic growth of affluence in the 1950s, couples retreated to the suburbs, and home cocktail parties epitomized the decade’s popular lifestyle image. The domestic bar became the crown jewel of home ownership, a boozy playground for the American male, and mixing cocktails at home became one of the manly arts, like carving a turkey.

And a glass called the “Roly Poly” came to define mid-Century drinking in America. All about comfort and fitting nicely in the hand, each glass holds just the right amount for a cocktail or a dram of a favorite scotch or bourbon. Why the name? If you place one on its side, it rolls back to an upright position.

I've been looking for this glass for years

I had one whiskey glass in my collection that I really loved, and was always my first option for bourbon or rye on the rocks. But I only had one and I could never find a replacement for my glass when it disappeared (IOW, I broke it and forgot that I did). This roly-poly is exactly right! It's not heavy, but it's solid and it's a perfect fit for my hand. It's definitely getting a first taste of my best bourbon tonight!

Really great feel in hand

You're mostly paying for the fancy little vignette that comes on the box and the marketing and naming of the product. That said, they aren't overpriced, they feel pretty hefty and they can make any drink a touch classier. I'd say a good item for a young couple of a bachelor while they work their way up to nicer glassware.

Unique and high quality

I love the glassware from this company and find that the silhouettes and shapes are not easily found in glassware that costs less. These round glasses feel so good in your hand no matter what you're drinking. Thick bottom that keeps it from easily tipping when you set it down, even when empty. No matter what you put in these, they look great. Well worth it.

Decent quality glasses but packaging makes for a cool gift. Don Draper would be proud.

Don't expect these to be a family heirloom glass, or anything ... they are an average-quality glass that you'd find in a hotel bar or restaurant. This company makes some good glasses (like this one) and bad ones with glass bubbles and uneven rims (like their Hemingway daiquiri glasses which I've reviewed.) Their story behind their glasses and its packaging is what differentiates them. Consider it like the 'J Peterman' of glassware, when every item has a story to tell. You are buying these for the advertising team's efforts more than the manufacturing team's efforts. Don Draper would be proud of that ... and he would be proud to hold this glass with a few fingers of bourbon before lunch. This glass, when filled with whiskey, or other vintage cocktails, does have a Mad Men-esque retro 50's styles vibe. It's round shape won't keep all it's contents inside if you bump it by mistake ... but will will rock a bit vs. tipping straight over. I don't know if I'd call it 'roly' as the bottom is flat ... but it is 'poly' in that it can be rocked a bit vs. a square-sided glass.I have big hands and I find it a bit awkward to hold ... it's just a tad narrow. I tend to hold it like a stemless shifter, which is actually good for bourbon, cognac or scotch because ideally the heat of your palm will warm the liquid and help release the alcohol fumes, which leaves you with a better taste. The rim is wide enough to fit many varieties of ice cubes but won't accommodate some of the larger varieties, especially the square chunks.Overall, there isn't anything earth shaking or revolutionary about these. If you gave them to someone as 4 unwrapped glasses, it would be just an 'ok' gift ... but thanks to the packaging it gets better ... a little blurb about the 1950's and a picture of Sinatra and a recipe for his favorite drink ... 2 fingers of Jack Daniels, 3 ice cubes and a splash of water. They are a bit pricey for what you get but you are paying more for the story and curation. Each glass holds about 6 ounces of liquid ... or 3 shots and a few ice cubes. We also make Brandy Alexanders in these, which look real good.
