President Eisenhower's Desk Sign

$59.00

The 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower kept a paperweight displaying this inscription on his desk in the White House and later in his Gettysburg office. It is a Latin proverb that translates to: "Gentle in manner, resolute in action." The original is on display at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library and Museum in Abilene, Kansas. This historic reproduction measures 8 1/2-inches wide and stands 2-inches in height.

Nicknamed "Ike", he was a five-star general in the United States Army who served as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe, with responsibility for planning and supervising the successful invasion of France and Germany. As President, he oversaw the cease-fire of the Korean War, kept up the pressure on the Soviet Union during the Cold War, made nuclear weapons a higher defense priority, launched the Space Race, enlarged the Social Security program, and began the Interstate Highway System. In his farewell speech, Eisenhower warned us: "In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex."
