Unofficial Palace of New York (Signed)$295.00
Born in Switzerland, Oscar Tschirky emigrated to America in the 1880s and set about changing the way 19th century society ate one step at a time. He advanced quickly in the restaurant world and by 1891, had become maître d’hôtel of Delmonico’s Restaurant. His fame spread throughout New York City and he then went with Hoffman’s to take charge of its famous Down-Town Restaurant, where he remained until he was hired by George C. Boldt to take charge at the Waldorf Astoria. Under Oscar’s delicate tutelage, gastronomy became a form of art for even ordinary Americans.
If the walls of the Waldorf Astoria could sing, you would hear from kings and queens, business tycoons, Hollywood stars, and U.S. Presidents who have stayed there. The guest list of permanent residents have included President Hoover, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Frank Sinatra, and Cole Porter, who penned many famous melodies in his Waldorf Tower suite. One remarkable book celebrates the Waldorf like no other. Only five thousand copies of The Unofficial Palace of New York were printed from type for the friends of the hotel. Offering a rare previously-owned edition of the 1939 souvenir-record of the Waldorf-Astoria, personally signed by the legendary "Oscar of the Waldorf." Serious collectors only, pls.
