Victorian Letterbox (Mail Slot)

Victorian Letterbox (Mail Slot)

$119.00

In 1849, the British Post Office first encouraged people to install mail slots to facilitate the delivery of mail. Before then, mailmen knocked on the door and waited patiently for someone to answer. Efficiency experts estimated that each mailman lost 1.5 hours each day just waiting for patrons to come to the door. In 1863, with the creation of Free City Delivery, U.S. postal carriers began delivering mail to home addresses. A mail slot (or "letterbox" in British usage) is a horizontal cut through the middle or lower half of a front door, covered by a metal flap on the outside for weatherproofing. Slots of a similar design had been installed in the doors and walls of post offices for people to drop off outgoing mail.

Offering a vintage cast-iron British Letterbox (Mail Slot) with Victorian design, salvaged from a London townhouse. Measures 5 3/4-inches wide by 2 1/4-inches high, with a 4-inch opening for letters.
