Greek Coffee Cup (Original Paper)
$36.00Newly arrived Greek immigrants started out as street peddlers, selling candy, flowers, and fruit from pushcarts. They arranged to live in groups, cooking for themselves in community kitchens. In this way, some of them became expert cooks and, upon realizing that they could make money selling meals to the public, they eventually opened their own coffee shops, lunch wagons, and diners. The economic success of the Greeks was due in large part to their willingness to work hard for many hours a day. As far back as 1919, the Greeks were believed to own one of every three eateries in New York City.
In 1963, the Sherri Cup Company set out to produce a to-go coffee cup that would appeal to Greek-owned businesses. Marketing director Leslie Buck dreamed up a motif that included blue-and-white colors from the flag of Greece. His customer-friendly message, WE ARE HAPPY TO SERVE YOU, was printed in Greek-style letters, adorned with a trio of steaming, mustard-yellow cups, flanked by ancient "Anthora" urns, and framed with a Greek Key pattern. It became an instant classic, so identified with New York City that its image appeared on the cover of the Manhattan phone book.
Offered is a 100-pack of the original 10-ounce coffee-to-go paper cups with lids. The Greek Diner Coffee Cup has been a genuinely unique and almost timeless symbol of coffee culture for nearly half a century. (Packed in factory-sealed plastic sleeves).
