Larkin "Everyman" Desk

$1,490.00

John Larkin, without a formal education, began work at the early age of 16 in 1861. By 1875 he opened his own laundry products company in Buffalo, New York. With the marketing efforts of his brother-in-law, Elbert Hubbard, the team became an immediate success. Their technique included the use of premiums enclosed with their products. The premiums started out small and were inside the soap packages. By 1893, Larkin was giving out premiums such as the Larkin Desk, a drop-front combination bookcase/desk. The simplicity of the design made the narrow desk easy to ship and its construction relatively inexpensive. Therefore, the Larkin Company was able give them away as premiums with sales of soaps and toiletries. His company was right out there in front with his company motto of "Factory to Family." And he meant it. During the roaring years of the catalog sales industry, the "Everyman" desk became a common item in almost all homes of the period. Ironically, this "premium" has outlived the company and all the disposable products he created.

The contemporary version of this historic piece includes modifications to make it laptop friendly, with spaces for cords and doors that conceal computer peripherals. Crafted in solid Cherry. (Measures: 14 1/2"D x 30"W x 61"H).
