Dirk van Erp Boudoir Lamp

Dirk van Erp Boudoir Lamp

$195.00

A native of Leeuwarden, Holland, Dirk Van Erp emigrated to the United States in 1886, traveling to San Francisco where he began working metal forms by hand hammering vases from discarded brass military shell casings while employed at the Mare Island Naval Shipyards. In 1910 he established Dirk van Erp Studios, producing primarily lamps with hammered copper bases and mica shades in the Arts and Crafts style, a movement that began as a search for authentic and meaningful styles for the 19th century, and in reaction to machine-made production aided by the Industrial Revolution.

In the tradition of the master craftsman and coppersmith, this appealing hand-finished mahogany bronze frame glows with the warmth of the natural amber Mica panels within, a quintessential example of the Arts and Crafts ethos -- simple, honest, natural, and handmade, yet modern. The shade is supported by a textured, baluster-shaped base in matching mahogany bronze finish. It is called a "boudoir" lamp because it does not give off significant light, but sets a mood. This handsome luminaire stands 21-inches tall and its 17-inch-wide shade is 7-inches in height.
